Employers Facing Staff Retention Crisis PDF Print

Melbourne, 8th November 2006 - Employers are facing a potential crisis in terms of staff retention according to a new research study on Australians’ attitudes to work, released today.

74% of employees indicate they will change jobs within two years with over 60% saying their career path will require them to change jobs, revealed the 1st Executive independent research study “The Great Divide”.

The report also identifies that most managers are out of touch with the factors that affect staff retention.  Most believe their team will be mostly intact in two years in stark contrast to what employees say.

“The divide between employer and employee views is particularly concerning in an employment environment characterised by skill shortages and the country’s lowest unemployment figures for 30 years”, said Andrew Thoseby, Director of 1st Executive.

Thoseby also said “there is a gap between what managers say they believe is important and what they actually do – particularly with regard to new employee induction and performance management, where the differences are very marked.”

The survey reveals that almost 50% of new hires commence their new jobs with little or no effective induction program in place.  More detailed analysis reveals that many more induction programs are superficial.
