Job Diversity: A Major Threat to Employee Retention PDF Print

Melbourne, 8th November 2006 - Employers are at risk of losing key talent if job diversity is not carefully managed, revealed by an independent research study on Australians’ attitudes to work, “The Great Divide”, released today.

The inaugural report by Melbourne based Recruitment and HR Consulting firm 1st Executive reveals that whilst 93% of employees like job diversity, those who actually had diversity in their job, wanted to leave as soon as the right opportunity came along.

The direct opposite result was found when challenge in a role was investigated.  98% of employees reported a need for challenge in their role, yet just over half of employees had a challenging job in their view.

Andrew Thoseby, Director of 1st Executive noted “the findings show that whilst job diversity can drive people away by potentially creating confusion and lack of focus, challenge in a role boosts employee retention. Consistent with the common thread of the report, the issue lies in the gap between what employees need, and what employees are receiving.  Managers are clearly out of touch with what drives employee retention.”

“Interestingly, Generation Y needs the most challenge to remain engaged in an organisation, yet the study shows they are the least challenged when compared to the more experienced workers.  This should concern management because Generation Y will dominate our workforce as Baby Boomers continue to exit the labour market”, concluded Thoseby.

The research study is available from 1st Executive for $295 including GST.  Survey design and statistical analysis by Aremel Research Pty. Ltd.
