Australia’s unemployment rate has hit a new 30 year low, falling to just 4.5% as at February 2007. What this shows is that the labour market is not easing, in fact – it’s getting tighter, and will continue to do so at an accelarated rate over the next 12 years.  Add to this the recent increase in wages released by the Wage Price Index, with Mining and Utilities amongst the industries enjoying a 4% wage increase, and there is significant pressure on employers to engage their key talent over the long term.  

1st Executive’s report into Australians’ attitudes to work – The Great Divide has revealed that the pressure is on for employers to attract and retain key talent primarily because employers are alarmingly out of touch with their employees.  Whilst almost 90% of employers believe that up to 80% of their workforce will be stable for at least two years, employees are demonstrating record disloyalty.  75% of employees report they will leave their current employer inside two years, meaning employers are forced to replace their entire workforce inside three years!
